The management of personal information at UNSW is regulated by the NSW Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 at http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/papipa1998464/index.html As a general rule, personal information is not released outside the University, except in response to a legal requirement such as a subpoena, and information regarding a student or member of staff at UNSW is not disclosed to a third party without the individual's consent. In the case of an emergency, or in exceptional circumstances, the Deputy Registrar or a more senior officer at his or her discretion, may authorise the release of personal information. In other situations, the release of information is governed by the Freedom of Information Act, 1989. In all circumstances, the University is conscious of its obligations under the Act. The University has a Privacy Management Plan http://www.infonet.unsw.edu.au/poldoc/privacy.htm which outlines the ways in which UNSW intends to meet its legal obligations under the Act and details the procedures for making complaints under the Act.
