Regional & Remote Parenting Workshops - FAQs
Who may attend the workshops?
While primarily aimed at parents, the workshops will be designed to benefit school teachers and teacher educators. Other people involved in the care of gifted children, such as home tutors or grandparents are also welcome to attend.
Who is funding the project?
The Australian Government has provided the funds for the project.
Who is responsible for the delivery of the project?
The Gifted Education, Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC) at the University of New South Wales, is responsible for the project. Preparation and presentation of the workshops will be undertaken by GERRIC.
Who will present the workshops?
Professor Miraca Gross, Professor Karen Rogers, Stan Bailey, Dr Peter Merrotsy, Bronwyn McLeod and Michele Juratowitch comprise the teaching team who will present the workshops. Each presenter has many years experience and expertise in the field of gifted education. The number of presenters at each workshop will depend upon the number of registrations received. The presenters attending each workshop will vary depending upon the specific needs of the community and the availability of the presenters at the time of the workshop.
Where will the workshops be held?
Forty-six workshops will be held in the following locations:
QLD: Weipa, Cairns, Townsville, Mt Isa, Rockhampton, Longreach, Mackay, Roma, Toowoomba

Who decided where the workshops would be held?
An Advisory Committee, made up of representatives from each State Education Department; the Independent and Catholic Education Systems; Rural Education Forum Australia; Isolated Children's Parents' Association; the Defence Force Special Needs Support Group, GERRIC and the Australian Government met to decide upon the most appropriate locations for the workshops.
When will the workshops be held?
Workshops will take place throughout Australia between September 2005 and September 2006. The dates for each location will be negotiated with local contacts and will depend upon factors specific to each location. Workshops will usually take place on a Saturday to enable parent participation.
How will people find out about the workshops in their area?
The UNSW Media office has already issued a media release about the project. When dates and locations are arranged, schools within the region, local media, Councils, libraries, and parent organisations will be notified and asked to publicise the workshops throughout their region.
Is registration necessary?
Yes. Those wanting to attend the workshops must register through GERRIC. Registration will close two weeks prior to the workshop to ensure that all participants
are able to receive the reading materials. Registration is located HERE, or via freecall number 1800 626 824.
What is the cost of attending the workshops?
The generous funding provided by the Australian Government allows attendance at the workshops to be free of charge for all participants.
Are the workshops only for parents of gifted children?
Many parents believe their child is bright but are unsure whether he or she is gifted. Because of the difficulty in accessing services, parents who live in regional and remote areas may not have had a child assessed. The workshops are designed to provide practical information about gifted children and gifted education and parents or teachers wanting to know more about these areas are warmly encouraged to attend the workshops.
Can people from capital cities attend the workshops?
Everyone is welcome to attend, however, the workshops have been tailored to address the specific needs of regional and remote families, which are different to those who live in capital cities.
What about people who are unable to attend workshops?
Some parents who live in regional or remote locations may be unable to travel to workshops because of distance, work or family commitments. Four on-line workshops will be held between September 2005 and September 2006 to provide an opportunity for these parents to access the information delivered through the workshops. Registration will be required for these on-line workshops.
What issues will the workshop address?
The workshops will contain information on definitions of giftedness and talent; characteristics of gifted children to assist in identification; strategies for preventing underachievement in gifted children; the impact of having a gifted child on family dynamics; some ways in which schools can respond to high ability; and parent advocacy.
What reading material will be available?
All workshop participants will receive practical, user-friendly reading materials designed for parents of gifted children and adolescents. In addition, copies of Professor Karen Rogers' book Reforming Gifted Education and Dr Cathie Harrison's book Giftedness in Early Childhood will be presented to libraries in the areas where the workshops are held. Workshop participants will also be provided with details of further reading in specific interest areas.
Can professional development for teachers be arranged?
The GERRIC presenters will be available to provide professional development workshops for teachers and school administrators while they are in the local region. There will be a cost associated with these teacher workshops but there will be a considerable saving for schools because the cost of transport to the region will be government funded. Principals and teacher educators in school systems interested in arranging professional development while the GERRIC presenters are in the region should contact Colette Batha at "c.batha@unsw.edu.au".
Who is arranging the workshop dates and locations?
Enquiries regarding workshop dates, arrangements associated with workshop locations and preparations can be directed to the Project Manager, Michele Juratowitch who can be contacted at "jurat2@optusnet.com.au".
