Students - Young Leaders of Change
Unfortunately, the YLOC program will not be running in 2007. We hope to offer it again in the future. Regular updates regarding GERRIC programs are made through our mailing list.
Young people face critical questions about their place in the world.
What do I believe? What can I do about it? Where and how do I start? These are key
leadership questions and many young people are now ready to take the steps to begin to
make a difference. This program will examine leadership at a global, local and personal
level, giving young adults with the desire to learn and a passion to make a difference,
the practical skills to develop themselves as leaders.
Young Leaders of Change (YLOC) is a springboard for development and
action. The program is open to students in Years 9-11 who are passionate about making
change happen. It is not essential for students to already be in a leadership role in
their school or community, but all participants should be committed to personal growth
and meeting challenges.
Program Overview
The program is practical and experiential in nature with a strong focus on defined action in each participant's immediate or broader community. This involves young leaders developing their skills as leaders and understanding the complexity and practicality of making change in the world. Most importantly it is about young people working for the greater good of their community and recognising that leadership is about achieving something bigger than themselves. The program does this by working at three levels:
- Developing an appreciation of what leadership is by examining the subject area from a historical and philanthropic perspective.
- Recognising the skills, attitudes, behaviours and values of a leader and making an assessment of possible personal development areas.
- Understanding what is required to make change towards the common good in individual or group change projects by understanding our society's issues more deeply.
YLOC is sponsored by a generous grant from the Telstra Foundation and Lee Hecht Harrison and is provided at no cost to the participants, other than the commitment of their time and full participation.
